In the next5-10years, Chongqing High-tech Zone will focus on building the “Life IC Valley”, a major health industry center at the “Western (Chongqing) Science City”. It will be one of the important measures to vigorously promote the implementation of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle --- The “Fourth Pole” of China’s Economic Growth. Guided by the general planning strategy of “Innovation in the north, Incubation in the central, Manufacturing in the south”, the major health industry development in the core areas at the Western (Chongqing) Science City will be in accordance with the general layout of “Three Parks, Multiple Centers” to promote industry-university-research-medical integration in spatial distribution, forming 12 square kilometers of area for future development. Professor Sun Junqiao from the Department of Design, School of Arts, Chongqing University undertook the planning and urban design of the “Manufacturing in the south”, providing the master plan and urban design overall implementation plan. The project has been successfully completed after three  months.

The master plan of planning and design of Shiban Block and Bafu Block

Since the initiation of the project in September 2020, Professor Sun Junqiao and Xiang Zhiyuan have led the field investigations at Shiban Block and Bafu Block with the team. In order to “play to the strengths and avoid mistakes”, the team has made efforts to utilise existing areas, and carried out multiple rounds of discussions with gevernment agencies from the High-tech Zone for the adjustment and refinement of plans until finally approved by the functional departments. The final “Clover” model builds the skeleton of the entire Life IC Valley city. With a focus on serving high-end manufacturing, and using planning and urban design to help the construction of the industrial chain, efforts have been made to promote the integration of biotechnology and information technology within the area. With the spiral shape of clover as a special feature of the plan, functional areas are laid out including the innovation and transformation office, experiment center, health industry exhibition center, and supporting facilities such as talent apartments, expert buildings, health sports centers, schools, hotels and business districts.

The Department of Design, School of Art, Chongqing University has dedicated to local economic development through “comprehensive investigation and research, effective communication, and concrete measures and actions”. The design serves not only as the foundation for the integration of BT (Biotechnology) and IT (Internet technology) at the“Life IC Valley”, but also future patterns of urban development of Western (Chongqing) Science City.
