The Only One in Asia! School of Arts’ Work Shortlisted for Manuel Ribas Piera International Landscape School Prize of XII Barcelona International Landscape Biennial

Recently, the finalists of the Manuel Ribas Piera International Landscape School Prize of the 12th Barcelona International Landscape Biennial were announced. A total of 10 works from 10 universities around the world were selected. The project "Disaster, Diverging Point" led by Jiang Shuai (supervised by Associate Professor Yang Ling), a student of the Department of Design of School of Arts of Chongqing University, was successfully shortlisted. This is the first time that Chongqing University has been shortlisted for this event, and it is also the only university in Asia to enter the final this year.

In recent years, the Department of Design has focused on solidifying students' basic skills, expanding international horizons, "teaching and learning in parallel", paying attention to cultivating students' cross-disciplinary and cross-border integration abilities, encouraging students to communicate and integrate across disciplines, broadening academic horizons, and "promoting learning and teaching through competitions". It has achieved good teaching results. This shortlisting is a new breakthrough for the Department of Design in the international competition results after winning the IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) and ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) awards.

Jiang Shuai's work starts from the ecological and industrial unsustainability problems caused by natural disasters, integrates multidisciplinary knowledge, and gives a feasible solution from the perspective of design.

The 12th Barcelona International Landscape Biennial will be held in Barcelona, Spain from November 24th to 28th, 2023. It will consider "how to face the challenges of future environmental construction and assess how landscape can become a basic tool for mitigating climate change". It includes the Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Prize for the best landscape projects, the Manuel Ribas Piera International Landscape School Prize, workshops on the latest hotspots in landscape, the Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Prize finalist project exhibition, and the 11th Barcelona International Landscape Biennial (2021) Works Collection Release Conference. The event has become an example in the international arena, and this event will once again gather professionals in the field of landscape.

Since the establishment of the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial, its purpose is to deepen and trigger debates around landscape. Taking landscape protection as one of the driving forces, it is not only based on the environmental perspective, but also on the discipline of landscape architecture. The discussions during the biennial include all disciplines related to landscape research and its evolution. Each Barcelona International Landscape Biennial revolves around a core theme, which is chosen according to the professional fields related to landscape and social current affairs and hotspots.
