The Music Performance program of the Department of Music of the School of Arts, Chongqing University is among the earliest practicing higher education institutions in Southwest China. Since its establishment in 2001, the Department of Music has built up a complete and mature music performance education and training system. With over 20 years of unremitting efforts, it has followed CQU’s mission - “Conduct research, Cultivate talent, Serve the community and Promote social development”, and the educational philosophy of “Pursuing excellence and vision, Advocating diligence and perfection” by integrating academic resources of Chongqing University as a “double first-class” research institution to carry out the national high standard teaching and research in order to set up a comprehensive and mature music performance education and training system.

The Department of Music has a well-structured team of full-time and part-time teachers, and a complete, mature, scientific and systematic music curriculum and student training with distinctive characteristics. The Department follows the educational philosophy of “Combining general and specialized education, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration, and integrating teaching and research”, and utilizes the resources from the “Southwest Ethnic Folk Art Research Center”, “Chongqing Social Science Popularization Base”, “Chongqing University Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center”, and the “Research Team for Skills and Techniques of Chinese Singing”, among other platforms, to cultivate cross-disciplinary talents that are equipped with solid knowledge, a broad vision and necessary skills in music performance and teaching for the new era.

In the past 20 years, the Department of Music has delivered hundreds of high-level talents to facilitate important cultural events and performances of various occasions for national ministries and commissions, CCTV and Chongqing municipal government. Teachers and students from the Department have participated in professional competitions at national and provincial levels and won music performance awards at various levels. They have also presided over multiple national and provincial level research projects. The Department of Music is committed to exploring regional resources, and adhering to the cultural heritages. It will continue to place equal emphasis on research and practice and promote effective integration of talent training and artistic practice.
